David Van Asten’s creative journey began in Barry, Wales, where he was born in 1951. His path took a life-changing turn when his family migrated to Australia and settled at the Holmesglen Migrant Hostel in Victoria. From his early years in Melbourne to his time at Jordanville Technical School, David showed a passion for creativity and a deep appreciation for visual storytelling.
At just 16, David entered the workforce, gaining invaluable life and hands-on experience that would shape his practical, grounded approach to design. His early career led him into the world of advertising, where he refined his skills across several agencies before joining Hallmark Cards Australia. As Graphics Manager, he played a key role in shaping the company’s visual direction, creating greeting cards and calendars that celebrated Australian and New Zealand culture.
David’s transition to children’s literature came with the release of Bushrangers, his first authored and illustrated book for Lamont Publishing. It was the beginning of a prolific and beloved body of work. Over the years, he has written and illustrated more than 35 children’s books, each filled with charm, wisdom, and characters that leap off the page. His illustrations blend warmth and humor, helping young readers connect emotionally with each story.
In addition to his publishing success, David spent 17 years running a thriving retail business, bringing his entrepreneurial spirit into the community. Today, in retirement, he is happily focused on his passions—painting, storytelling, and spending time with his grandchildren. David remains dedicated to creating works that inspire, entertain, and bring joy to families around the world.
“Creativity is not a phase—it’s a lifelong companion.”
